Uncover the Magic of Ukraine: Seminar Series with Journalist Iryna Yevstafieva
Wednesday September 4, 2024 | 2pm – 3:30pm | 123 La Rose Ave & Zoom
“Kateryna Bilokur: The Artist Who Impressed Pablo Picasso”
Seminar in Ukrainian and English
In Kateryna’s paintings you’ll find peonies, hollyhocks, dahlias, roses, poppies, marigolds, viburnum, tulips, phloxes blooming forever. You can imagine the fragrence of apples and grapes, and the kingly stalks of rye and wheat ripen. All these eternal symbols of nature appear more beautiful on her canvases than in real life. But during the Soviet period, she was not appreciated and Kateryna did not feel the recognition she deserved. Until her last days, she was accompanied by poverty, a half-starved existence, and a cold house.
When the world-famous maestro Pablo Picasso saw the paintings of Kateryna Bilokur at an international exhibition in Paris in 1954, he stood near them for a long time – as if hypnotized – and called her a genius. It is impressive that not a single flower, not a single twig is repeated on her canvas. That is, the artist created unparalleled masterpieces every time. Come discover Kateryna Bilokur’s masterpieces and be transported.
