Six Mix Fall Friendsgiving: An Inclusive Community Dance for Adults with Developmental Disabilities

The Six Mix Fall Friendsgiving Dance is hosted by Sisters in the Six, a local registered charity supporting young women with developmental disabilities through friendship, learning, community involvement and opportunities to build greater independence. The Six Mix was created to extend that same spirit of friendship and belonging beyond the Sisters themselves, providing adults with developmental disabilities from across the community with a fun, welcoming and inclusive place to socialize, dance, make new friends and simply enjoy a night out together. Our first Six Mix Spring Dance was met with an overwhelmingly positive response. Families shared how much their adult children enjoyed having an event that was truly created with them in mind, and many told us how much they would welcome more opportunities like it. Their enthusiasm and encouragement inspired the Sisters to add a second Six Mix dance to our annual calendar. This fall’s Friendsgiving-themed celebration will bring a touch of woodland magic to Etobicoke, with an evening filled with music, dancing, friendship and fun. But the Six Mix is about much more than a dance. It is about creating something many adults with developmental disabilities have too few opportunities to experience after leaving the school system: a social life of their own, new friendships and a genuine sense of belonging in their community.
