SUMMARY:The Hook and I Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the Hook and I show\, the annual display of works by the Etobicoke Rugcrafters\, a Resident Group of Neilson Park Creative Centre. While viewing the show\, you’ll notice the variety of rughooking styles and the wide ranging use of colour and textures in the hooked pieces. Many of the rugs are a world away from the rugs originally designed and hooked by our grandmothers to add warmth and cheer to the floors of their homes.\n\nAlthough some of the rugs will be destined for use on floors (and can last up to 100 years)\, many are meant to be works of art to be enjoyed or to reflect family stories or personal journeys. For those of you unfamiliar with rughooking\, it is usually done by pulling loops of cut wool through burlap or linen. While the use of cut wool fabric is still used by many\, alternative fibres and yarn (especially for punch hooking) are used. Some of these include: recycled fabrics\, t-shirts\, fleece or roving\, sari silk\, nylon stockings and just about anything you might want to try. As you can see the new world of Rughooking is full of wonderful colour and a variety of textures.\n\nHooked rug designs are often described in styles. The most simplistic are usually called Primitive. Some other design styles or categories would be: Landscape\, Geometric\, Oriental\, 3 Dimensional\, Portrait and Pictorial. As you tour through the show\, you’ll see examples of different styles and some that defy being categorized.\n\nAlong with rugs that have been rughooked and punchhooked by our members during the last few years and through Covid\, there are also rugs and mats in one specific grouping. Each year our members are issued a challenge for the show and this year they were asked to design and hook a rug using the theme of WAVES. These are all grouped together on the east wall. Look for their different interpretations as you go through the show.\n\nIn honour of one of our late but longest active members and mentor to many\, Shirley Kirby we established the “Shirley Award” for her work and dedication to both Etobicoke Rugcrafters and Neilson Park Creative Centre. We encourage you to take a ballot from the table by the door and vote for your favourite rug.\n\nThe joys of rughooking as a resident group at Neilson are inspiration from the wonderful variety of works produced by our members\, the camaraderie and support of other hookers and the adventure you take when you begin a rug. We are especially fortunate to have several certified rughooking teachers in our group who are always willing to help\, provide advice and share techniques. Etobicoke Rugcrafters welcome all to join us and discover this colourful fibre art. We love to welcome beginners and the experienced and will help anyone get started on their rughooking journey.

SUMMARY:PAINTING IN PIXELS: CONTEMPORARY DIGITAL ARTWORK
DESCRIPTION:In quantum physics\, the Heisenberg Effect describes how a researcher’s own observations literally change the thing observed – i.e.\, reality. I believe an artist’s observations go one step further. They can change reality\, but also create new realities. \nMy current visual art process is entirely digital\, i.e.\, I paint on a computer. Nevertheless\, my pieces are hand-painted. I use a stylus as my brush\, and pixels as my paint. To begin\, I might snap a reference photo of a particular moment of time-space. I interpret it using painting software (Corel Painter or Procreate) that lets me determine the brush strokes’ position and character\, its colour and flavour. I then alter those brush strokes\, much the way I use Word to amend text\, adding and combining multiple layers to create depth and ambiguity. \nOn the macro scale\, digital painting fits somewhere between art photography and classical painting techniques – the synthesis of O’Keeffe and Stieglitz\, if you will. On the micro\, my own digital artwork also exists in a liminal in-between space\, shifting back and forth between abstract and representational\, concrete/physical (the Print) and metaphysical (the Pixel).

SUMMARY:Patience: A Space for Reflection and Thought
DESCRIPTION:Patience: a Space for Reflection and Thought is a solo exhibition of hand-pulled prints. \nThe creations that will be exhibited are produced using a limited number of collagraph plates. Plates are developed including organic shapes and lines\, and using found materials and recycled textiles. Editions are created through relief printing of multiple layers resulting in the development of images with simple to complex relationships between lines\, shapes\, patterns and colours. Pressing of “ghosts” or “cognates\,” are also incorporated. This process of working also allows adjustments to the printing process to be made as the image develops. The final images trigger for him emotions and memories\, and invite viewers to pause\, reflect\, and have their own visual and emotional response. \nPrintmaking is a matrix based operation with the artist determining what is upon the physical matrices whether it is for example wood\, stone\, or a metal plate. The expressive capabilities of original printmaking are limitless and go way beyond the limitations imposed by the origins of printmaking and the historical concern for replication. For Roger printmaking stands as an art form capable of variation and alteration leading itself to experimentation and variations in execution. This has been exploited in printmaking by Canadian artists such as Harold Town and Otis Tamasauskas. Because Roger is more interested in using printmaking as a process for reaching a desired image\, in this series he is making small editions and variable editions with only 3-6 hand-pulled prints\, or unique prints.
