SUMMARY:Free Barre Fitness Classes for Older Adults
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by a combination of ballet barre technique\, standing Pilates repertoire\, rehabilitative exercises\, and aerobics\, this low impact workout will get you dancing along to the beat of classic songs. We will use a chair as a “barre” to add stability and support to our workout\, while engaging in movements focused on targeting specific muscle groups\, training our balance\, and improving our posture. The class will slowly build up from warm ups to more complex sequences to a nice cool down\, helping you work not just your physical and cardiovascular endurance\, but also keep your memory sharp. And hey\, you can even play “Name That Tune” or sing along when your body needs a break! \n\n\n\nClasses run every Tuesday at 10am – 11 am in-person and virtually. \n\n\n\nThe program is offered to older adults 55+ and is offered in-person or online via zoom. Workshop is held in person at St. Demetrius Apartment 123 La Rose Avenue and virtually via zoom. \nWatch Valerie Scannura’s masterful flamenco dance and enjoy the masterful guitar playing of Roger Scannura while you:\n• Learn and practice some Flamenco moves\n• Learn fascinating facts about Flamenco\n• Like a Spaniard\, shout out the Spanish “Jaleo” to encourage the dancers and musician\,\nand get ready for the mesmerizing beauty of the art of Flamenco\, unravelling before your eyes! Valerie Scannura and Roger Scannura are owners of Ritmo Flamenco Dance School. \nFlamenco is an integrated form of dancing\, singing and music. It is a bold and elegant expression of deep and powerful feelings. Flamenco was declared UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2010 and was named as a World Heritage Treasure.  \nValerie Scanura is a graduate of the National Ballet School’s prestigious teacher training program and taught ballet for several years before flamenco became her main love. Valerie has studied flamenco with many great artists such as Merche Esmeralda\, Ciro\, Manolete\, El Guito\, Paco Romero\, Maria Magdalena\, Carmela Greco\, Alejandro Granados\, Yolanda Heredia and others too numerous to mention. Since 1992 she has been travelling to “the heartbeat of Flamenco”\,i.e. Andalusia in Southern Spain\, every year\, where she participates in various workshops and continues to add to her creativity and inspiration as both a teacher and a dancer. Valerie has guided many dancers to professional careers in Spanish dance and flamenco.  She is also a compelling performer. “Valeria\, as always is a compelling performer.” Paula Citron – The Globe and Mail \nRoger Scannura Flamenco Guitarist/Composer\, Disciple of Paco De Lucia\, Course Director at York University. Roger is an internationally recognized flamenco guitarist and a leading exponent of Nuevo Flamenco. He has been immersed in music since early childhood and mastered the techniques and nuances of Flamenco guitar while in Spain for 12 years under the auspices of Pepe Habichuela and other gypsy masters.  Roger with his music and dance ensemble has performed for Prime ministers\, Dignitaries as well as an assortment of celebrities including Russell Crowe and Sting. Jacob has been focusing mostly on jazz music being inspired by Charlie Parker\, John Coltrane\, Wes Montgomery\, Jim Hall and more modern jazz like Jonathan Kreisberg\, Joel Frahm and Bill Charlap to name a few. He has gotten to study music under Canada’s best jazz talent including names like Lorn Lofsky\, Trevor Giancola\, Andrew Marzotto and Jocelyn Gould. He as played music in several big bands as well as other ensembles focusing on more modern/contemporary music.
