SUMMARY:Introducing BEREHYNYA — a mural by John Kuna
DESCRIPTION:The Shevchenko Museum\, an acclaimed Ukrainian cultural hub in Toronto’s West End\, announces the unveiling of the mural BEREHYNYA by renowned Toronto artist\, John Kuna\, on April 27\, 2025. The official ceremony is open to the public and will begin at 2:00 pm inside the Shevchenko Museum\, 1604 Bloor Street West\, Toronto.\n\nIn the Ukrainian culture\, Berehynya denotes the revered status of a woman who is a positive archetype and a symbol of wisdom\, devotion and perseverance. A stalwart supporter of her loved ones\, she tends the eternal fire in the family hearth. But her image suggests a broader connotation carrying larger emotional weight. Berehynya is entrusted with the sacred task of protecting the soul and spirit of the nation and maintaining the people’s resolve to draw strength from their distant past while building a connection to the future.\n\nThe new John Kuna mural\, portraying Berehynya as the guardian of Ukrainian lands is an exciting and valuable addition to Toronto’s open-air gallery of public art which he has been building over the years in the historic Islington Village. The artist has created a visually striking image\, featuring the main character as a woman in traditional Ukrainian dress. Her head is adorned with a shining wreath of golden wheat which reads almost like a halo. She is concentrated on her task\, embroidering a Ukrainian ritual cloth (rushnyk) with images of blooms and an ancient symbol of the tree of life.\n\nThe mural\, bursting with vibrant colours and rich symbolic imagery\, is designed to reference the artwork of Taras Shevchenko whose name the museum bears. A colossal figure in nineteenth-century Ukrainian history\, Taras Shevchenko\, a magnificent poet\, writer\, artist and folklorist\, was a public and political figure whose call for Ukrainian independence and self-determination is more relevant today than ever. Ukrainians are fighting for every inch of their land while struggling to defend the principles of democracy in a complex and unpredictable political situation. But all wars inevitably end\, and the indomitable spirit of freedom-loving people carries on.\n\nThe mural’s message is to reflect the everlasting beauty and sophistication of Ukrainian cultural heritage. It offers an informative glimpse into the treasure trove of Ukrainian customs and traditions and serves to beautify our city and inspire its residents for many years to come.\n\nShevchenko Museum\n1604 Bloor Street West\, Toronto ON\nPh: 416-534-8662\nW: www.shevchenko.ca\nE: shevchenkomuseum@bellnet.ca\nFB: https://www.facebook.com/ShevchenkoMuseum/\nInst: https://www.instagram.com/shevchenko_museum_toronto/\nYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/@shevchenkomuseum2124

SUMMARY:York Plays 2025
DESCRIPTION:Come experience The York Corpus Christi Plays as they were performed in 14th-century England!\n\nFree & Open to All Ages (Outdoor event—bring blankets\, folding chairs\, sunhats\, or umbrellas!)\n\nPoculi Ludique Societas (PLS)\, sponsored by the Centre for Renaissance and Reformation Studies (CRRS)\, presents a full-scale recreation of the York Corpus Christi Plays. This day-long event will feature 50 plays performed sequentially by 17 North American theatre groups. Each play—drawn from biblical narratives and medieval devotional texts—will be performed on replica wagon stages\, recreating the mobile staging practices of medieval York (1376–1569).\n\nTravel Back in Time: Watch plays performed on authentic replica wagon stages by costumed actors from across North America.\n\nPerfect for All Ages*: From the Creation of the World to Noah’s Ark to The Last Judgment\, these bite-sized plays\, some funny\, some moving\, are great for kids and adults alike. (*Plays that may not be appropriate for younger children are noted on our website and programme.)\n\nCome & Go as You Please: Plays repeat at three different spots\, so wander between them\, grab a snack\, and enjoy at your own pace. (No need to stay past midnight—unless you want to!)\n\nBring the whole crew and be part of theatre history—grandparents\, classmates\, history buffs\, and future knights & princesses\, all are welcome!\n\nRain Plan: If storms hit Saturday\, we’ll move to Sunday.

SUMMARY:Protest Against Destruction of Affordable Housing & Long Branch Community
DESCRIPTION:Join Us for the Protest Against the Destruction of Affordable Housing & Our Beloved Long Branch Community!\n\nLet’s come together at the park near Long Branch Ave and Park Blvd (near the Cenotaph) to stand up against the destruction of affordable housing and the Long Branch community. Our voices matter\, and it’s time to make them heard.\n\nTogether\, we can make a difference and protect our community. Don’t miss this opportunity to show your support and fight for what’s right!\n\nThey want to close off Lake Promenade\, deadending the drive along the lake\, which will make adjuant streets even busier. There will be no visitor parking for Long Branch Park. All this for just more unaffordable and unwanted small condos!\n\nOver 1\,000 tenants’ lives will be disrupted as well as thousands of homeowners from the neighbourhoods of Alderwood\, Long Branch\, New Toronto and Mimico. There will be tens of thousands of construction trucks using local streets over the 12-15 years of construction. There will be traffic\, noise and lots of dirt.\n\nTheir newly revised and still secret plan now goes up to 40 stories from 7 currently. And they want to 4x the density of this small site\, far from public transit (40 minutes to Kipling Station!). They’ll add 3\,000 people to a small parcel of land and with fewer than 1\,200 parking spaces.\n\nJoin us to make some noise that developers do not own this city and homeowners and tenants do have a voice. The ice cream truck will there serving delightful treats as well as some passionate speakers. Join us and bring friends and family. And enjoy the lake view.
